How effective is TASA?

Prior to TASA's implementation in 1999, excessive trailer volume was a common complaint in movie theatres. In 1998, the loudest trailer measured Leqm93. The current upper limit is Leqm85. Conventional wisdom is that for every 10 decibels, you are either doubling (or halving) the apparent volume to an audience.

The TASA upper volume limit has been lowered in stages in concert with feedback from the National Association of Theatre Owners (NATO).

Before TASA standards were established, the range between the loudest trailer and the softest trailer was about 15 decibels. Today it is closer to 5 decibels. This makes it easier for theatres to keep the trailer sound levels in line without having to adjust volume controls.
